Instagram wants to eliminate some of the content that touts unsubstantiated weight-loss products on people's timelines.
The photo-sharing app is introducing new protocol that will prevent ads urging people to pay for so-called weight-loss solutions or cosmetic operations from showing up on the newsfeeds of users under the age of 18, Instagram announced Wednesday.
The company will also consider taking down posts entirely if the products being billed are deemed unrealistic.
"We want Instagram to be a positive place for everyone that uses it and this policy is part of our ongoing work to reduce the pressure that people can sometimes feel as a result of social media," Instagram public policy manager Emma Collins said in a statement.
Facebook, which owns Instagram, plans to institute the same policies.
Jameela Jalil, an actress on "The Good Place," celebrated the move following Instagram's announcement.
"I've been working with Instagram all year towards this, who were amazing to deal with, and they expressed that they passionately care about creating a safer space for us all online," she wrote in an Instagram post. "This happened so much faster than I expected and I'm so proud and happy and relieved."
Some Instagram users then took to the comments section of her post to express their desires for such ads to be blocked for people over 18, too.
