5 Strategies to Lose Weight Without Counting Calories

For Pavelka, the act of counting out calories is a fruitless endeavour to create a nutrition habit that actually sticks.

'The way you eat goes way beyond calories,' explains Pavelka. 'All the weighing and measuring, it stops you connecting to how you feel about what you're eating - it's a distraction from what's important.'

'I see food as a way to connect back to yourself and your goals and would much rather you looked at your food and connected it to feeling healthy and strong as opposed to how many calories each one of those nutrients carried,' he continues.

Research published in the Journal of the American Medical Association found that when the quality of diet - e.g. whole foods and vegetables - was prioritised over the quantity, participants lost significant amounts of weight over a 12 month period.

Cutting back on added sugar, processed foods and refined grains proved to be a more substantial way to lose weight than meticulously counting out each calorie and finding foods to 'fit in' the study found.

If eating in this way is a sharp change from previous eating habits, then take some time to adjust. Perhaps add a side of vegetables without looking up the nutritional value or having a protein-rich afternoon snack like Greek yoghurt to carry you through 'til suppertime without resorting to low-calorie but nutrient-poor 'energy' bars.
